Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennial vines up to 15 m long, base more or less woody for several m, up to 3 cm in diameter.

Stems: New season's stems glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly ovate with a narrow basal sinus, 4–15 cm long, 7–16 cm wide, shallowly and palmately 3–5–lobed, the lobes broadly triangular. Apex acute, mucronate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins denticulate. Petiolate. Stipules absent, tendrils in the stipular position 2–3–branched.

Flowers: Flowers in staminate flowers in glabrous panicles 8–20 cm long, peduncles 5–8 cm long, pedicels 5–10 mm long; pistillate flowers 6–10 per head, peduncles 1.3–3 cm long, subsessile or on pedicels up to 4 mm long. Flowers usually unisexual (and the plants monoecious or dioecious), actinomorphic. Calyx of 5 sepals; sepals inserted on hypanthium. Corolla of staminate flowers 5-lobed, 8–10 mm in diameter, the lobes white, ovate–triangular, petals inserted on hypanthium alternate with calyx lobes, usually connate at base, the limb often rotate; Corolla of pistillate flowers 3–5(6)-lobed, usually smaller than in staminate flowers. Staminate flowers: anthers coherent. Staminate flowers: Stamens (2)3(–5), inserted at base of hypanthium; filaments connate into a column; anthers curved or flexuous, coherent and twisted in a head, opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers: staminodes absent. Ovary inferior, of a single carpel or 3-carpellate with carpels connate into a single 3-lobed cell; ovule 1, placentation parietal; stigma shortly 3-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit green; fusiform; 13–25 mm long (incl. beak); 6–8 mm in diameter; 3–6–angled; beaked; indehiscent. Seeds 1 per fruit; ovate; endosperm absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring usually on ridges or spurs in mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 500–1,300 m.
